This is my last Africa blog update. I am now out of slides to scan from my past trips. So going forward, only new work will be added untill I get back there someday. In the meantime enjoy the last Africa Blog in Nairobi National Park.

Nairobi National Park has been designated as a rhino sanctuary . Nairobi National Park is really the most favored place in the country to see rhino. Along the south-western boundary of the park, the scenery is magnificent; this is an area of steep valleys created by streams joining the Athi River. Hyraxes are plentiful on the rocks alongside the road and the sure-sighted may spot klipspringer or mountain reedbuck. On the boundary road there are splendid views over the Kitengela plains, the dispersal area for the park's ungulates. The park side of the river is an area favored by zebra.

Within the Nairobi National Park's 117 square kilometers, there are over 80 species of mammals and more bird species than can be found in the whole of the British Isles. During the rains, both the long and the short, wild flowers are in profusion and there are places where the plains are an unending wave of yellow daisies (Bidens Palustris), which seems not to be liked, as food, by any wildlife.

Amboseli's case it is big skies and far horizons combined with swampy springs and dry and dusty earth trammelled by hundreds of animals.

Amboseli's dust is ancient volcanic ash, whose salt crystals shimmer on the surface of the parched lakebed during the dry season. This creates hazy mirages which make you question just what is real.

Surrounding Amboseli are ranch areas where the Maasai share the land with the wildlife. Wild animals tends to avoid the village areas as it there are far too many people and the grazing has already been eaten by the Maasai's all-important cattle.

Salt Lick & Taita Hills Game Lodge 1978

Salt Lick Lodge is a unique lodge built atop stilts overlooking a waterhole. It is linked by suspended walkways under which elephants potter. Its name is taken from its setting - a natural salt lick which was a congregating place for the neighborhood's salt-hungry residents. The lodge lies on the outskirts of Tsavo West National Park. The sanctuary where the Salt Lick Lodge is located was once a sisal plantation. it is now a successful animal sanctuary with abundant game.

Taita Hills is adjacent to Tsavo National Park, one of the world's largest game reserves, the Taita Hills Hilton Safari Lodge is a five hour drive from Nairobi, three hours from Mombasa and 45 minutes from Voi Railway Station. The Lodge has its own wildlife sanctuary. They also have a great lunch

Mountain Lodge 1973

Mountain Lodge is a private hotel on the fringe of Mount Kenya National Park, at an elevation of 7200 feet. It is laid out specifically for animal watching: all of the rooms have large windows and balconies on the side of the hotel facing the forest. A large artificial watering hole in the clearing on this side of the hotel attracts forest animals, and lights are kept on all night so the attracted animals can be easily viewed. Perhaps not the most natural wildlife viewing site in the world, but a welcome change from seeing animals only from the ubiquitous safari vehicles.

Most of these shots were taken from the hotel viewing deck along with a mini van in the bush.

Victoria Falls constitutes one of the most spectacular natural wonders of the world. The Local people call it "Mosi-oa-Tunya" -- the smoke that thunders and the Falls are remarkable. There is a magic about them manifested in the towering column of spray when the river is high, the thunder of the falling water, the terrifying abyss and tranquil lagoons upstream in which hippo and deadly crocodiles lurk.

The Rift Valley is one of Kenya's provinces outside Nairobi. It is dominated by the Great Rift Valley which passes through it and gives the province its name. One of the most stunning parts of the valley is the Levy Home shown below.

The Maasai, 1978

The life of the Maasai is dominated by their herds of their cattle and livestock. Their diet is based on milk and meat from their livestock. At one time, the Maasai were feared as ruthless conquerors and cattle rustlers who invaded other tribal areas in search of bigger grazing land and more cattle. The Maasai are also famous for drinking a mixture of cattle blood and milk during ceremonial rites. Their rites and traditional ceremonies are taken very seriously, and it is not common to allow outsiders to attend. Elders play a very important role in the community and society at large.
